Pensil-Malay-2008

A heart-breaking look at physically disabled Indian orphan Badrul (M.Subash), who leads a hard life as he is mistreated by his stepmother Mon (Maimon Mutalib) and step-aunt Zaitun (Khatijah Tan). Despite his disabilities, Badrul is independent and earns his living by selling keropok and porridge. He still loves his stepmother unconditionally even though she verbally and physically abuses him. Badrul’s only relief comes in the form of his paternal grandmother Mak Nek (Rominah Sidek) and through his friendship with the village madman Junid (Jalil Hamid). Badrul’s handicap only impedes his body movements and speech but his mind is sharp and, as he is raised as a Muslim, is devout and regularly makes his way to the mosque to pray. Badrul also has a hidden talent as he is artistic and the film derives its title from the object he values the most – his pencil.
