నా అభిప్రాయం:మొదట్లో నేను దక్షిణ కొరియా సినిమాలు చూడడం మొదలుపెట్టినప్పుడు హాలీవుడ్ సినిమాలను చీప్ గా కాపీకొట్టేస్తున్నారు వీళ్ళు అని అభిప్రాయపడ్డా, తర్వాతర్వాత లోతుగా చూడడం మొదలుపెట్టాక కానీ అర్థం కాలేదు వీళ్ళ సినిమాల సత్తా.

వీళ్ళ సినిమాలు చాలా వరకూ హింసాత్మకంగా వున్నా, మిగిలిన సినిమా పరిశ్రమల లాగా వయొలెన్స్ ని చూపించడం కాకుండా వయొలెన్స్ తో ఎక్స్పెరిమెంట్లు చేస్తుండడం వీరి ప్రత్యేకత.

ఒక్క హింస ప్రధానాత్మక సినిమాలే కాకుండా ప్రస్తుత సమాజంలో మానవునికి ఎదురవుతున్న వివిధ ప్రశ్నలను సమర్ధవంతంగా లేవనెత్తడంలో కూడా దక్షిణ కొరియా సినిమాలు సఫలం కాగలిగాయి. ఈ సారి ఇక్కడ లండన్లో జరిగే 51వ చిత్రోత్సవంలో ప్రదర్శింపబడుతున్న Secret Sunshine అనే సినిమా చూసి దాదాపు ఒక రోజంతా అదో రకమైన అనుభూతికి లోనయ్యాను. ఎప్పుడో ఒక మంచి పుస్తకం చదివితేనో, లేదా ఎదైనా మనసకు హత్తుకునే దృశ్యన్ని చూసినప్పుడో లేదా జీవితంలో మనకెదురైన అసాధారణ సంఘటనల ద్వారా మనం నేర్చుకునే కొత్త విష్యం లానో ఈ సినిమ కూడా అలాంటి ఒక అనుభూతినే మిగిల్చింది.

మీరు Albert Camus రచించిన The Stranger (లేదా The Insider) పుస్తకం చదివిన వారయితే ఈ సినిమా మీకు చాలా మంచి అనుభూతిని మిగులుస్తుంది. ఈ సినిమా కథ చెప్పకపోవడమే చాలా మంచిది. మొన్నీ మధ్య వచ్చిన మన చెత్త సినిమాలో Woman’s joureny లా కాకుండా నిజంగా ఈ సినిమా ఒక మహిళ యొక్క జీవన ప్రయాణం. ఇందులో నటించిన Jeon Do-yeon నటన అత్యధ్భుతం.

ఈ సినిమా దర్శకుడైన Chang-dong Lee రూపొందించిన Oasis, Peppermint candy సినిమాలు కూడా తప్పక చూడదగ్గవే! మరో విశేషమేమిటంటే ఈయన కొన్నాళ్ళపాటు దక్షిణ కొరియా ప్రభుత్వంలో సాంస్కృతిక మంత్రిగా పని చేసినప్పటికీ సినిమాల మీద ప్రేమతో తిరిగి రాజీనామా చేసి సినిమాలకే పరిమితమయ్యాడు. సినిమా పేరు చెప్పి రాజకీయాల్లోకి వెళ్ళే మనవాళ్ళకీ, రాజకీయాలు వదిలి సినిమాల్లోకొచ్చిన ఆయనకు ఎంత తేడానో కదా!

Since making Oasis in 2002 Lee Chang-Dong has served for a couple of years as Korea’s Minister of Culture, and it’s interesting to speculate what bearing his experience of high office has had on Secret Sunshine, a devastating account of a woman’s mental turmoil. Lee Shin-Ae (played with scalding intensity by Jeon Do-Yeon: Best Actress, Cannes) moves to her husband’s home town Miryang – the name means ‘Secret Sunshine’ – after his death in a road accident. Estranged from most of her own family and her in-laws, she’s determined to make a fresh start. She sends her young son Jun to school and opens a piano academy, fending off romantic overtures from a car-workshop owner (Song Kang-Ho, The Host) and ’spiritual’ overtures from a local Christian group. Then tragedy strikes again and she falls to pieces; her life becomes a vortex of hatred and forgiveness, faith and nihilism, composure and hysteria. The word ‘gripping’ is always over-used in blurbs, but it’s the right one here. Lee enters his character’s world with unsparing vehemence, taking the viewer to the very heart of an emotional breakdown and a fragile recovery. Bresson and Buñuel would likely both have admired the extraordinary achievement.

Lee graduated in 1980 with a degree in Korean Literature from Kyungpook National University in Daegu, where he spent much of his time in the theater, writing and directing plays. After a spell teaching Korean Language in high school, he established himself as a renowned novelist with his first novel Chonri in 1983. Later in his career, to the surprise of many, he turned to movie making.

Lee did not study filmmaking before starting out. He penned two screenplays, Park Kwang-su’s To the Starry Island in 1993 and A Single Spark in 1995. After being encouraged by his contemporaries to finally step behind the directors chair, Lee made Green Fish, a “critique of Korean society told through the eyes of a young man who becomes enmeshed in the criminal underworld”[2], in 1997.

In 2000, Lee made Peppermint Candy, a story following a single man in reverse chonology through 20 years of South Korean history (from 1980’s student uprising, to the film’s 2000 release). All of his films have received overwhelming critical acclaim and awards, with his latest, Oasis, a story involving a mentally ill man and a woman with cerebral palsy, winning the prestigious Director’s Award at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

He served as the minister of Culture and Tourism in the South Korean Government from 2003 to 2004.
