Sivaji – Film Review by Ranjani
Post script first :
All this rant is not worth your while or mine .
But if you are willing to go ahead anyway, please do …….
After much hype and hoopla about Shivaji we set out from our town Reading, no not in Nagapattinam but in UK to Feltham to watch it .
It is my first ever Rajni movie and after a news-knows-how-many crores shell out i expected it to stimulate my senses /sensibilities a trifle bit .
Scene after scene the movie crushed my spirits ,stomped over my sensibilities and scratched my soul with its screechy nails.
I have often been warned that logic doesn’t figure in such movies and i put aside that bit of my brain, actually all of it in the closet before we set out .
The movie has Rajni aka Shivaji – the idealist wanting to build colleges, schools, hospitals for the poor and needy.
After many crushed attempts, the tired Rajni becomes Robinhood and changes black money to Ujala white.
All fine and eternal sunshine, until now.
Along with this main dish came french overfry jokes from Vivek and sloppy tomato sauce Shriya gyrating to cluttered music.
All this stampede my poor soul bore and bore .
I have been warned and i ask no more .
But my thumb (these days my soul resides here) felt sore when :
Rajni wants Tamizh Kalachara Pen so why let Shriya’s small dresses scream with suffocation ? (logic please please stay away)
Shriya sheds her mel aadai and runs in front of a train to stop it from Rajni whose foot is stuck in the tracks.
Eye candy with soda brandy !This is just what a Tamizh Pen should do .
Rajni comes up with “witty” dialogue about colour discrimination ?Aha you have made a point Mr.Rajni but what about scenes when you cringe on seeing two nubile girls who have been painted black ?
On being asked to sing, Kalachara Pen Shriya sings Theeradha Vilayattu pillai and Mr Smartass Vivek sneers at her ? She dances a classical number and you demand a ghostly Raa Raa ?
You poo-poo away dwarves in a song sequence .So this is how equally you see your makkal ?
All this made me realise that 60 crores of reeking money cannot even by mistake produce anything sensible .
But what totally threshed the poor thing was when i turned around to see lots of asians (many thanks to software) feeding their kids with such things .i wanted to leap across and shut every unblinking pair of small eyes that were gaping at this monstrosity.
But i silently put my thumb(soul) in my mouth instead.
My soul and belief in humankind is lying low for a while .
For a long time now it will be music, nature, swans,
…………………………
All this said i pause while entering the send button .
All this rant is not worth your while or mine .
Why must i even bother ?
i hope to sleep this night and wake up next morning
and consider it all a nightmare .
i wore my logic back and she types in bold Verdana :
Let the world rest kid
but not on your shoulders .

Shankar was not trying to make a good shankar movie. For that he will go for some small hero. The goal is to make a good rajani cinema. So you should not be reviewing it critically. Judge it against rajini cinema standards. Otherwise you will feel that you lost your money.
well …
Your meaningful yet emotional reaction to this “Shivaji” is in place. You must be aware of the promotional fanfare that is going on and what – even the US Consul over here has “enjoyed” this movie. As the years go by people may tend to forget Chatrapathi or the Chevalier and remorsefully remember this ridiculous version.
It is a pity that this fellow knows how to exploit the situation and derive maximum mileage for himself out of it. Sivaji Ganesan or Savithri or J B Chandrababu or even MGR (in his own way) were all the while actors. They studied life to imitate it on the screen and had left behind certain memorable performances that did Tamil Nadu proud. The situation now is that there is no necessity to “act” in films these days. It is a kind of programmed stuff with all eyes on the box office. There is not an element of art in the movies, but good photography and the omnipresent monster of technology stares at you scene after scene. Film is not a matter of nuances, subtelities, grace movements, powerful dialogue, didactic prose and the like. It is a substance-less vessel and the best vessel is the one that makes the biggest noise.
In fact in spite of many persuasions I did not watch Chandramukhi as we had seen Manichithratazh umpteen times and I preferred to hold only those memories and nothing else. Certainly shivaji is ruled out even if an offer of offers come to me.
Your desparation is something aking to what Ray had to say once: “At least the sun rises in the East, regularly” , meaning no one manipualtes that act!!!!!!!!!!
How is COF? Worth the $5? Doing a review? Thanks.
HI,
I think it is time waste to watch and talk about any movie that do not take real problems of real people. Rather than talking about any fake movie, I think nice thing to do is make a good movie.
I never dreamt of we can expect a good movies from any stars of India. You need very different fabric of brain to create different movies.
Look at who are produces movies:
As per I know the guy who does a licker business and land business, or mafia produces movies.
The girl who devote her life to earn easy money acts in the films, the guy who thinks he can get on with their parents support or madness of ordinary people (weakness of fans) acts in the movies.
How can we expect a movie in an art form.
Look at Telugu actors, the hero is projected as a cheep guy in the streets, he behaves as if he is an asshole, an uncultured guy, like his real life personality. In way they are cultivating a bad culture in the name of movies, we pay money to buy bad things.
Look at who are actress, all are came to movie industry to get easy popularity or money, how can we expect a good film. We never had a great actors in the past and how can we expect in the future.
The movies are not about real problems and people. The problems they show in films are not real problems at all. Pleasures of common people are Institutionalized, in form of fan clubs, or stopping correct movies and supplying wrong movies. I don’t think the aim of the any art form or movie is pure entrainment, if it is entrainment it should not be as ugly as it is. I think movie or any social event is to cultivate culture, now the movies cultivate corporate interests or fake culture. It is obvious that the directors, producers or whoever have own the industry don’t know anything about art and social responsibility.
we have to realize that we are not in the society somebody do bad and somebody have to fight about it. Everybody is corrupted in different levels. We have to question ourselves, the enemy is nowhere, he is already with in our psych. We need stories that tell us this fact.
We have to figure out the problems around us, then we can make films with such ideas!
For me, It was a ‘father’s day’ out on 17th, to watch ‘Sivaji’ arranged by my son (an ardent fan of Rajani). How the fans can go into mad frenzy with their whistling, dancing, throwing money, flowers , was seen by me there for the first time. My son (26, yes- twentysix and an executive in an MNC),a Rajani fan -as I said already, was no exception from the other fans in making a nuisance(celebration?)in the theatre.
However I enjoyed it very much, not the movie but the noisy celebrations by the Rajani fans.
May be the great hype/ movie making shrouded in secrecy has raised our expetations to greater heights. The gap between the expectation and the reality is too much, hence the disappointment.
It is true “Rajni wants Tamizh Kalachara Pen so why let Shriya’s small dresses scream with suffocation ? ”
This movie can be watched, but before entering the theatre by switching of the brains!
One must understand that
one simple formula of Sankar is:
Just kill somebody for a small wrong doing and thus convert corrupted India to clean India.
To this all sort of masala and hype is added.
I wonder why Sankar movies are going for hits in Andhra!!!??? (don’t mind if it is hit in Tamil Nadu, because it ought to be a hit).
Finally Telugus got the real picture…
thanks to AVM’s lavish spendings…
My message is:
First of All Understand that just because some movie is dubbed into Telugu,
We can’t say it is a Telugu movie.
They are killing Telugu movies, name and fame of Telugu movies, stars, artistes, and even degrading the image of Telugu people.
By encouraging dubbed movies, we are our own industry, not developing our industry.
Don’t blindly believe the bloddy hypes.
I guess that the point of discussion here is less about movie’s potential to entertain. There can be no dispute over that, taking into consideration the thrill and obsessive enthusiasm of the masses. But I believe that getting amusement or diversion or pleasure especially through a movie must at least have an iota consciousness in it. A simple sense of purpose. Sheer Comedy/a football match/an action packed show/ or a serious documentary all have a systematic sense of purpose. Nonsense does not have a purpose. It never had in the history or will in the the future. Unfortunately large sections of the Indian population are so groomed to be entertained in such a fashion. Children are exposed to learning senseless movie punch lines at a very young age because of parents who don’t take care of isolating them as they themselves find it a part of a very natural growing process. At least in India isolation may not be an easy solution. But here in the US I see flocks of ABCD kids fans of Sharukh Khan and Kareena Kapporr keeping up to date with the releases. Parents inculcate all this in the name of Indian culture. They rather have their daughter go with her “Indian” friends to watch Rang De Basanti than have her play Basket Ball with her ‘Mixed Ethnicity” classmates. Sad but true ! “Infiltrate boldly and learn what is better” is a risky approach for a lot of people. But it pays. Neither do they even know that seeking pleasure that appeals to the intellect is a good way of life nor do they even care. Thumb of rule – You stay away. Spread the opinion to those who understand and are willing to see in this light. Leave the rest to the rest.
